Nitrous Oxide Sedation - Dentist in Halifax

Do you avoid seeing your dentist in Halifax because of dental fear or even a phobia?

If so, you aren’t alone. Dental fear or phobia is common and can be caused by a variety of reasons, including previous negative dental experiences. It’s a term used to describe fear, anxiety or stress in a dental setting. Being scared to visit the dentist can result in delaying or avoiding dental treatment. It can be triggered by numerous things such as needles, dental equipment, dental operatory rooms, or just by the thought or idea of going to the dentist.

Although our dental office highly sympathizes with your anxiety, avoiding the dentist isn’t the answer to this problem. Regular dental visits are important to keeping your mouth healthy since oral health problems can occur without your knowledge. Decay and gum disease are just a few of the oral health problems that can arise with little to no symptoms. By avoiding your minor visits to the dentist, you may be creating a larger problem later on in life. Your dentist can check and treat your dental needs, as well as, prevent and reduce the risk of bigger dental problems.

How can we help you conquer your fear of the dentist?

Dr. Daniel Tam offers a number of sedation methods to help reduce anxiety and pain during your visit. The two main types of sedatives at our dental clinic are Nitrous Oxide Sedation and Conscious Sedation:

  • Nitrous Oxide Sedation: You may know this sedation under its more commonly used name, “laughing gas”. It promotes relaxation during your procedure and is administered using a face mask. As you inhale the gas, you will likely receive the effect of an elevated state of euphoria and relaxation, which in turn, drastically reduces your feelings of pain and discomfort. Once the face mask is removed, the sedative effects quickly wears off and you should be able to resume your daily activities.
  • Conscious Sedation: Unlike Nitrous Oxide Sedation, oral Conscious Sedation is given prior to your procedure. You will take an oral sedative, typically in a liquid form, approximately one hour prior to your scheduled appointment. By the time you arrive for your dental appointment at our practice, the sedative has already taken effect and you’ll be in a relaxed state. It is not uncommon for patients to fall asleep during their procedure due to the relaxing effects. However, these sedative effects take longer to wear off so you likely want to arrange a ride home.

Dr. Daniel Tam will help you choose the appropriate sedation method for your needs, while offering direct billing to your dental insurance. We care about you and your comfortability. We want nothing but the best care for our patients. Contact our office to learn more about our sedation options.
